Fat transfer, often times referred to as “fat grafting” or “fat injections”, is a very popular plastic surgery procedure. When patients are thinking about fillers or implants for augmentation, fat can be used as an alternative. In the event you are thinking about a filler to correct facial creases and you also have areas of your body with unwanted fat. This fat can be “transferred” from the unwanted area to the area requiring a filler. This is completed by removing the fat using lipsosuction and injecting it in the region being filled. Essentially, the fat is “transferred”, hence the name. In addition to removing excess fat you also would not have to endure maintenance treatments due to absorption like with filler products. Body part augmentation, traditionally done using implants, can also be achieved using fat transfer. Essentially, excess fat (often from the midsection or leg areas) is removed and transferred to a more desirable location. This is commonly done for breast or buttock augmentation. Obviously, a breast or buttock augmentation completed in this way will take a bit longer than a traditional augmentation using implants. But, the end result is permanent, natural and obviously you also remove excess fat simultaneously.
