Fat transfer surgery has grown dramatically in popularity in the last few years. You may have heard of it by its other popular names, fat grafting or fat injections. When patients are thinking about fillers or implants for augmentation, fat can be offered as an alternative. In cases when a traditional filler would be used to correct wrinkles, fat could be transferred instead. Essentially, fat is removed (using liposuction) from an area of the body where you have excess fat. It is then, transferred to and injected into the area needing a filler. This allows for both a decrease in excess fat and the filling of wrinkles. By utilizing fat vs a traditional filler, you can achieve the desired result without the need for follow-up maintenance treatments that are required with filler products. Surgeries like breast augmentation and buttock augmentation can also be completed using this method. Basically, you can “transfer” fat from an undesirable area to the area you wish to augment. Imagine moving your unwanted belly fat to your breasts instead …it can be reality! Obviously, a breast or buttock augmentation completed in this manner will take a bit longer than a traditional augmentation using implants. But, the outcome is permanent, natural and obviously you also remove excess fat at the same time.
